Through 2032, the United States is expected to have approximately 193,100 job openings for registered nurses annually, however only 177,400 nurses are projected to enter the workforce between 2022 and 2032, .
To help meet this growing demand, Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Ellmer School of Nursing at Ϲ has introduced a spring admissions cycle for the nursing pre-licensure program (B.S.N.) — a move that will expand enrollment in the school by more than 50%. Classes for the spring cohort will begin in January 2026.
“With the demand for registered nurses growing every year, it’s more important than ever that we expand opportunities for aspiring nurses,” said Lynn Wiles, Ph.D., chair of the undergraduate nursing program in the Ellmer School of Nursing at Ϲ. “By adding a spring admission cohort, we can train more skilled nurses, distribute more graduations throughout the year and help address the workforce shortage here in Virginia and across the country.”
The pre-licensure program lasts five semesters and includes classes, laboratory and clinical experiences under the guidance of experienced and engaged faculty. Program application requirements are available
The new spring cohort not only increases access for aspiring nurses but also strengthens the region’s healthcare workforce. According to Dr. Wiles, retaining talent locally is a top priority for the school — a commitment reflected in two scholarship programs established through the integration of Eastern Virginia Medical School into Ϲ.
Both the Dennis and Jan Ellmer Health Scholars Program and the Brock Opportunity Scholarship require recipients to serve locally upon graduation.
Rene Love, Ph.D., dean of the Ellmer School of Nursing at Ϲ, said the initiative underscores the school’s dedication to both education and community impact.
“By expanding enrollment, we’re preparing more nurses to meet the critical needs of our healthcare system,” Dr. Love said. “Our students are not only gaining the knowledge and experience to excel in their careers, but they’re also making a lasting difference in the health and well-being of the communities we serve.”
The spring admissions cycle is open now until all spots are filled. Applications are accepted online, and this additional admissions cycle will continue for years to come.
