EMPOWERING CHANGE: BUILDING ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES AND BECOMING A SUSTAINABILITY CHAMPION

ABSTRACT
In an era marked by escalating environmental challenges and a pressing need for sustainable development, higher education institutions (HEIs) are increasingly recognized as pivotal players in advancing sustainability objectives in the communities they serve. These institutions not only act as centers of knowledge and innovation but also have the unique capacity to influence future generations of leaders, policymakers, and citizens. By integrating sustainability into their curricula, campus operations, and community collaborations, HEIs can foster a culture of environmental stewardship and social responsibility. This study explores the multifaceted engagement of higher education institutions, particularly regional comprehensive universities (RCUs) in supporting sustainability objectives, highlighting innovative practices and collaborative initiatives that exemplify their commitment to a sustainable future. This study has an overarching research question: How can individual actors at regional comprehensive universities effectively advance environmental sustainability initiatives? From implementing green campus initiatives to promoting interdisciplinary projects on ecological stewardship, HEIs are at the forefront of driving systemic change. Furthermore, this engagement extends beyond the campus, as institutions partner with local communities, governments, and businesses to address pressing environmental sustainability challenges. Utilizing ethnographic research methodology throughout this exploration, I aim to illuminate the critical role that individuals in higher education play in shaping a sustainable world and to inspire further action within the academic community.
