VHS Resident Benefits

Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at 惇蹋圖 residents and fellows have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of programs. Employees are responsible for selecting the benefits that best meet their needs.

Residents and Fellows, along with their eligible dependents, are eligible to participate in the Commonwealth of Virginia State Health Benefits Program. Available health insurance plans include:

  • COVA Care
  • COVA HDHP
  • COVA HealthAware
  • Sentara Health Plans HMO
  • Kaiser Permanente HMO
  • Tricare Supplement

Each plan includes coverage for preventive dental services, prescription drugs, and behavioral health services. Most plans also offer optional buy-up coverage for expanded dental, vision, and hearing benefits.

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available to all health insurance enrollees. The EAP provides free, confidential visits to assist with life challenges, including mental health support, substance abuse, legal services, and more.

Medical and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are also available:

  • Medical FSAs allow you to use pre-tax dollars for qualifying medical expenses for yourself and your eligible dependents. The maximum annual contribution is $3,300.
  • Dependent Care FSAs allow you to use pre-tax dollars for qualifying dependent care expenses. The maximum annual contribution is $5,000.

Newly hired Residents and Fellows may enroll in health benefits within their first 30 days of employment. Coverage is effective the first of the month following the hire date. Additional opportunities to enroll or make changes occur during the annual Open Enrollment period in the spring, or within 60 days of a qualifying mid-year life event.

Residents and Fellows at 惇蹋圖 receive basic term life insurance through New York Life, effective on the first day of employment. Coverage equals one times your annual salary, rounded to the nearest thousand, and premiums are paid by the University.

Optional life insurance is available through New York Life for Residents/Fellows, their spouse, and dependent children.

After six months of employment, Residents/Fellows may also elect portable, cash-value whole life insurance through New York Life.

Residents and Fellows are eligible to enroll at any time in 惇蹋圖s 403(b) retirement plan, with recordkeepers TIAA and Fidelity. Both pre-tax and post-tax contribution options are available. There is no employer contribution to this plan.

For 2025, the 403(b) contribution limit is $23,500. Catch-up contributions are available:

  • Ages 5059: $7,500
  • Ages 6063: $11,250
  • Ages 64 and older: $7,500

Enrollment and contribution changes can be made through the system.

Residents and Fellows receive:

  • 120 hours of annual leave
  • 160 hours of sick leave

These balances are granted each July 1, do not roll over, and are not paid out upon separation.

Residents and Fellows are also provided with employer-paid short-term and long-term disability insurance through New York Life:

  • Short-Term Disability (STD): 70% of base salary after a 14-day elimination period.
  • Long-Term Disability (LTD): 60% of base salary after a 180-day elimination period.

Both STD and LTD coverage are effective on the date of hire.

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave each year for certain medical and family situations. To be eligible, you must:

  • Be employed for at least 12 months, and
  • Have worked at least 1,250 hours in the 12 months prior to the leave start date.

In addition, Residents and Fellows may request Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) leave, which provides up to six weeks of paid leave for certain medical and family situations once during the residency program. This leave may run concurrently with other types of paid/protected leave and includes one week of paid leave upon return to work.

Residents and Fellows also have access to:

  • Legal Resources Legal and Identity Theft plans
  • Aflac insurance plans
  • A Sentara Health Plans Employee Assistance Program specifically for residents and fellows
  • State employee discounts

Residents and Fellows are covered under workers compensation for approved work-related injuries. Please see the Workers Compensation guidelines for additional information.
