±¬ÁÏ¹Ï Community Music Division Scholarship
The Yuko Agata Farman Memorial Award is an award established in honor and memory of Yuko Agata Farman, a former instructor in the ±¬ÁÏ¹Ï Community Music Division.
Her journey through life was marked by passion, dedication and love for music. Yuko was born in Tokyo, Japan and had exceptional language skills, learning English early in life.
Yuko Farman was a gifted and caring piano instructor for the ±¬ÁÏ¹Ï Community Music Division from July 2023. She was a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music through the Music Teachers National Association. Yuko also served as co-president of the Southside Hampton Roads local chapter, Tidewater Music Teachers Forum, from 2023 to 2025.
This scholarship allows deserving adult students to study with ±¬ÁÏ¹Ï Community Music Division. Candidates demonstrating financial need will receive priority.
Two to four scholarships will be awarded each year in fall (apply by September 1) and spring (apply by January 15).
Candidates seeking this scholarship must complete a formal interview with the Director of Community Music Division prior to receiving an award from this scholarship fund.
Students receiving awards from this scholarship fund may only use their award towards tuition fees related to Community Music Division private lessons in piano.
Candidate Criteria
Candidates for the Yuko Farman Scholarship must meet the following criteria:
- An adult student (over the age of 21) returning to piano keyboard studies. Students should currently reside in the Southside Hampton Roads area. Military, English as second language, and adults of all ages are encouraged to apply.
- A student with significant progress and practice may reapply for a second scholarship within the same school year.
- Demonstrate a passion and love for piano music.
- Complete an interview with the Director. No scholarship amount will be distributed until this interview is completed.
- Audition: Student should be prepared to play two prepared pieces of contrasting styles in an informal setting to demonstrate the current level and ability for the Director and other CMD piano instructors.
- A schedule of regular weekly lessons for the 9-week session will be agreed upon with the student and assigned piano instructor. The student is expected to attend these lessons and prepare weekly assignments as assigned by the instructor.
- Director, teacher, and student will collaborate to set appropriate goals for student achievement.
Application Requirements
Each application must include:
- Cover letter.
- This should detail the kind of experience the applicant has on their instrument and their desired outcomes of study. Should include a brief description of how the scholarship would be meaningful to the applicant.
- Complete application form with all relevant information.
- Titles and Composers of Pieces to be played for the audition.
- The length of the programmed music should be between 15 to 20 minutes.
Notes
- This award is ONLY for non-credit courses through ±¬ÁÏ¹Ï Community Music Division. The awarded amount will ONLY be applied directly toward tuition fees related to ±¬ÁÏ¹Ï Community Music Division courses.
- This award will not be applied to courses for credit and cannot be applied towards the tuition fees of degree-seeking students for their degree program.
- Degree-seeking students may still apply for this award in order to take private piano lessons through ±¬ÁÏ¹Ï Community Music Division.
- ±¬ÁÏ¹Ï Community Music Division courses appear on non-credit transcripts.
- Students taking courses with ±¬ÁÏ¹Ï Community Music Division are non-credit students of ±¬ÁÏ¹Ï and must follow university protocol.
